World Salt Awareness Week 2025: Reducing salt together

World Salt Awareness Week will take place from May 12 to 18, 2025, organized by World Action on Salt, Sugar & Health (WASSH). This week focuses on raising awareness about the health risks of excessive salt intake and encouraging actions to reduce salt consumption worldwide.

Why is reducing salt important?

Average global salt consumption is 10.8 grams per day, more than double the recommended maximum of 5 grams per day according to the World Health Organization (WHO). High salt intake increases blood pressure and the risk of cardiovascular diseases, which are the leading causes of death worldwide. It is estimated that approximately 2 million deaths annually are related to excessive salt consumption.

They offer a ‘5 ways to 5 grams’ poster with practical tips to reduce daily salt consumption.
